Snapfish
Snapfish, promising 48-hour delivery, faced an initial hurdle: their website couldn’t handle the full-size image files, requiring a reduction in image quality for upload. This immediately suggests a compromise in potential print detail.
The resulting prints exhibited a consistent orange tint, increased contrast, and overall darkness compared to the original images. Histogram analysis confirmed these color shifts and a lack of color evenness across the print. Furthermore, “blown-out highlights,” areas of pure white lacking detail, were observed, particularly on the bride’s dress – a common photography flaw and aesthetically undesirable.
Photobox
Photobox, also with a 48-hour delivery timeframe, produced prints that, surprisingly, lacked vibrancy despite increased contrast. While contrast was artificially boosted, the images appeared dull and lifeless, losing subtle tones and details, especially noticeable in the intricate details of the wedding dress. Even though supposedly using the same paper as some competitors, the Photobox prints felt noticeably thinner, almost translucent.
Boots
Boots, offering a quick 2-hour turnaround, presented one of the most unexpected results. Black and white prints exhibited a distinct blue cast and excessive contrast. Histogram analysis revealed the addition of color where none should exist in a monochrome image. While seemingly acceptable in isolation, direct comparison with the original black and white image exposed the significant color inaccuracy.
DSCL Colour Lab
DSCL, a less consumer-facing but reputable company often used by photographers, delivered prints within 24 hours. The prints were deemed “OK” overall. However, a noticeable increase in contrast and slight darkening were present compared to the original files. While not drastically flawed, the deviation from accurate color reproduction was evident.
Timpsons
Timpsons, known for instant printing, provided the most surprising and disappointing results. Despite expecting similar outcomes to Boots, the Timpsons prints were significantly worse. The prints were dull, almost translucent in areas, and dramatically altered the appearance of the subjects. Histogram analysis confirmed a severe lack of highlight reproduction, resulting in an unflattering and unhealthy pallor to the couple in the photo. Size limitations at Timpsons also meant opting for a smaller print size than the standard 12″x8″ used for other services. While staff service was commendable, the print quality was a major letdown.
Pro-Lab Photo Prints
The professional photo lab prints, with a 72-hour delivery (and potentially next-day via the online gallery), stood out significantly. Visually, they closely matched the original digital images and my calibrated screen. Histogram analysis showed negligible differences, rendering direct comparison graphs unnecessary due to their near identical nature. The lab prints exhibited a slight natural contrast enhancement typical of professional prints but were otherwise remarkably accurate in color and detail. They even captured subtle details like camera grain and fine hairs, details lost in prints from other services. The colors were vibrant and true-to-life.
The option for Fine Art prints, offering a matte finish, further enhanced the quality with richer blacks and reduced reflection, ideal for framing.
