How to Share Disappearing Updates with Instagram Notes

Instagram Notes offer a unique way to share quick thoughts and updates with your followers, and while they aren’t exactly disappearing photos, they do have a temporary nature, making them a fun and ephemeral communication tool on the platform. If you’re looking to share something light and momentary with your Instagram community, Notes are a great feature to explore.

This guide will walk you through how to use Instagram Notes effectively, ensuring you can share your updates from both your inbox and profile, understand how they work, and make the most of this feature.

Sharing a Note from Your Instagram Inbox

One of the easiest ways to post a Note is directly from your Instagram inbox. Here’s how:

  1. Open Direct Messages: Tap the send icon () or the messenger icon () located at the top right of your feed.

Alt Text: Instagram direct message icon to access inbox for sharing notes.

  2. Find the Note Feature: Look for the “Note…” option positioned above your profile picture at the very top of your inbox.

  3. Compose Your Note: Tap on “Note…” to open the note composer. Here, you can type your message, keeping it to a maximum of 60 characters. Instagram also gives you several creative options to enhance your note:

    • Mention People: You can directly mention other users in your note, provided they allow mentions.

    • Add Music: Incorporate a soundtrack to your note by tapping the audio icon (). Keep in mind that music notes aren’t available everywhere.

Alt Text: Audio icon to add music to your Instagram note for enhanced expression.

    • Write a Prompt: Engage your followers by writing a prompt to spark interaction.

    • Add a Short Video: For a more visual note, tap your profile picture, then the blue button to record a quick video using your device’s camera. Video notes are limited to just 2 seconds. Note that video notes created from your inbox will not be visible on your profile grid.

  4. Choose Your Audience: Decide who can see your note. You can select between “Followers you follow back” or your “Close Friends” list.

  5. Share Your Note: Once you’re happy with your note and audience selection, tap “Share” in the top right corner to make it live.

It’s important to remember that certain types of notes, especially those with GIFs or videos, might not appear on your profile grid, but they will always show at the top of your followers’ inboxes who are within your chosen audience.

Sharing a Note from Your Instagram Profile

You can also create and share a note directly from your Instagram profile page. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Go to Your Profile: Tap your profile icon () or your profile picture, located in the bottom right corner of the app, to navigate to your profile.

Alt Text: Instagram profile icon to access user profile for sharing notes.

  2. Find the Note Feature: Just like in the inbox, look for the “Note…” option situated above your profile picture at the top of your profile page.

  3. Compose Your Note: Tap “Note…” to start writing. You have the same 60-character limit and options as when creating a note from your inbox, including mentioning users and adding music.

  4. Select Your Audience: Choose whether to share your note with “Followers you follow back” or your “Close Friends“.

  5. Share Your Note: Tap “Share” in the top right to post your note to your chosen audience.

Understanding Instagram Notes: Ephemeral Updates

Instagram Notes are designed to be temporary updates. Here are key things to know about them:

  • 24-Hour Visibility: Your note will be visible at the top of the inbox and on your profile for up to 24 hours. After this period, it will automatically disappear from Instagram.
  • Deletion Option: You have full control over your notes. You can delete your note at any point before the 24-hour mark by simply tapping on it and selecting “Delete note“.
  • Interaction: People who view your note can interact with it by liking it or replying to it. Only you can see who has liked your note.
  • Starting Conversations: When someone replies to your note, it opens a direct conversation between you and that person, which you can find in your inbox.

Instagram Notes are subject to Instagram’s Community Standards. Even after a note is no longer visible after 24 hours, it can still be reviewed if reported for potential violations.

Leaving a New Note

You can update your note as often as you like. When you post a new note, it will replace any existing note you’ve currently shared.

Here’s how to leave a new note:

  1. Access Existing Note: Tap on your current note, which is located at the top of your inbox or profile. Then, tap “Leave a new note“.
  2. Compose Your New Note: Enter your new message, keeping it within the 60-character limit.
  3. Choose Your Audience: Select who you want to see your new note.
  4. Share Your New Note: Tap “Share” to publish your updated note.

Instagram Notes are a fun and lightweight way to keep your followers updated with snippets of your day or thoughts. While they aren’t disappearing photos in the traditional sense, their 24-hour lifespan offers a similar sense of immediacy and ephemerality, perfect for casual updates and interactions.
