How to Remove Pictures from Google Photos But Keep Them on Your Phone

Managing your digital photos across devices and cloud services can sometimes feel complicated. Many users utilize Google Photos for its backup and syncing features, but there might be times when you want to remove photos from Google Photos while ensuring they remain safely stored on your phone. This guide will walk you through the process of deleting photos from Google Photos without losing them from your device.

To successfully remove backed-up photos and videos from Google Photos while keeping them on your device, follow these steps carefully:

  1. Disable Backup on Your Devices

The first crucial step is to turn off the backup feature on all devices where you intend to keep the photos or videos. This prevents Google Photos from syncing changes and potentially deleting your local copies.

  2. Access Google Photos on the Web

To manage your Google Photos library directly and ensure you’re only deleting from the cloud, use a web browser. Navigate to photos.google.com/login on your computer or mobile browser and log in to your Google account. Using the web interface provides more control over your cloud-based photos.

  3. Delete Photos and Videos from Google Photos

Once logged in on the website, carefully select and delete the photos and videos you wish to remove from Google Photos. Remember, these actions will only affect your cloud storage, not the local copies on devices where backup is turned off.

  4. Verify Local Copies on Your Device

After deleting from Google Photos, give your device a few minutes and ensure it is connected to Wi-Fi. Then, close and reopen the Google Photos app on your iPhone or iPad. It’s important to check the backup status of a photo to confirm it’s only a local copy. To do this, tap on a photo, then tap More (represented by three vertical dots – see image above). Scroll down to “Details.” If backup is off, it will indicate that the photo is only on your device.

If you still see the deleted photos in your Photos view within the app, don’t worry. These are likely just local copies that remain on your device.

Important Considerations:

  • Backup Benefits: By leaving backup off, you will lose the advantages of automatic cloud backup, such as access to your photos from any device and protection against device loss. Consider the benefits of backup before disabling it permanently.
  • Re-enabling Backup: If you decide to turn backup on again in the future, be aware that there’s a possibility the photos you deleted from Google Photos might be backed up again if they are still present locally on your device. Similarly, in some instances, re-enabling backup could potentially cause local copies of already deleted cloud photos to be removed.
  • Managing Storage: Regularly managing your Google Photos and device storage is a good practice to keep your digital life organized and avoid confusion about where your photos are stored.

By following these steps, you can effectively remove pictures from Google Photos while keeping them safe and accessible on your phone, giving you more control over your photo storage and management.
