How to Get My Photos Back from iCloud

iCloud Photos is a fantastic service for automatically storing your precious memories in the cloud, making them accessible across all your Apple devices. However, there might be times when you need to download these photos and videos to your device for offline access, backup purposes, or simply to have them stored locally. Whether you’re using an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or PC, retrieving your photos from iCloud is a straightforward process. This guide will walk you through the various methods to easily get your photos back from iCloud.

Using the Photos App via Settings

This is the most direct method to download your iCloud Photos directly to your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, ensuring you have local copies of your original files.

On your iPhone or iPad

To download original, high-resolution versions of your photos and videos directly to your iPhone or iPad, follow these simple steps:

  1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on your name at the very top of the Settings menu to access your Apple ID settings.
  3. Select iCloud.
  4. Tap on Photos.
  5. Under the “iCloud Photos” section, choose Download and Keep Originals.

Once you select this option, iCloud will begin downloading the original versions of your photos and videos to your device. Keep in mind that this process can take a significant amount of time and storage space, depending on the size of your iCloud Photo Library. Ensure you have enough free space on your device before starting the download.

On your Mac

If you prefer to download your iCloud photos to your Mac, the Photos app makes it equally easy:

  1. Open the Photos application on your Mac.
  2. In the menu bar at the top of your screen, click on Photos and then select Settings (or Preferences in older macOS versions).
  3. Click on the iCloud tab.
  4. Select Download Originals to this Mac.

Similar to iPhones and iPads, selecting this option on your Mac will prompt the Photos app to download the original, full-resolution versions of your iCloud Photo Library to your computer. Again, the download time will depend on the size of your library and your internet connection speed.

Using the Photos App with Shared Albums

Shared Albums offer another way to download photos and videos, particularly if you only need specific content that has been shared with you or that you have shared with others.

On your iPhone or iPad

To download individual photos or videos from Shared Albums to your iPhone or iPad:

  1. Open the Photos app and scroll down to the Shared Albums section.
  2. Tap on the Shared Album you want to download photos from.
  3. Tap on the specific photo or video you wish to save.
  4. Tap the Share button (the square icon with an arrow pointing upwards) located in the bottom-left corner.
  5. Choose Save Image or Save Video from the Share Sheet options.

The selected photo or video will be saved to your device’s Camera Roll, making it accessible even without an internet connection.

On your Mac

Downloading from Shared Albums on a Mac is just as simple:

  1. Open the Photos app and select a Shared Album from the sidebar menu on the left.
  2. Select the photo or video you want to download.
  3. Control-click (right-click) on the selected photo or video.
  4. Choose Import from the context menu.

This action will import the selected photo or video into your main Photos Library on your Mac, effectively downloading it from the Shared Album.

Using iCloud.com

iCloud.com provides a web interface to access your iCloud Photos from any device with a web browser, including iPhones, iPads, Macs, and PCs. This is especially useful for downloading photos to non-Apple devices or when you prefer using a web browser.

On your iPhone or iPad

To download photos from iCloud.com using your iPhone or iPad:

  1. Open a web browser (like Safari or Chrome) and go to iCloud.com/photos.
  2. Sign in with your Apple ID and password.
  3. Tap Select, and then tap to select one or more photos or videos. To select your entire library, tap Select All.
  4. Tap the More button (three dots in a circle).
  5. Choose Download. For more control, tap More Download Options.
  6. Select your preferred download option:
    • Unmodified Originals: Downloads the photos and videos in their original format as captured or imported.
    • Highest Resolution: Downloads the best quality version suitable for your device, typically in HEIC or H.265 format.
    • Most Compatible: Downloads in JPEG or MP4/H.264 format for maximum compatibility across different devices and platforms.
  7. Tap Download.

Your browser will download the selected photos or videos, usually saving them in your device’s “Downloads” folder.

On your Mac or PC

Downloading photos from iCloud.com on a Mac or PC is very similar:

  1. Open a web browser and navigate to iCloud.com/photos.
  2. Log in with your Apple ID credentials.
  3. Click to select one or more photos or videos. To select multiple items, hold down the Command key (on Mac) or Control key (on PC) while clicking.
  4. Click the Download button (cloud icon with a down arrow) in the upper-right corner. Alternatively, click More (three dots) and then More Download Options for format choices.
  5. Choose your download options as described above (Unmodified Originals, Highest Resolution, or Most Compatible).
  6. Click Download.

The selected photos or videos will be downloaded to your computer, typically to your default “Downloads” folder.

By using any of these methods, you can easily get your photos back from iCloud, ensuring you have access to your memories whenever and wherever you need them. Regularly downloading your photos can also serve as a good backup strategy in addition to iCloud’s cloud storage.
