Remembering Donald “Don” Grady Darby: A Life of Service and Cherished Memories

Donald “Don” Grady Darby, a beloved figure in Hahira, Georgia, passed away on Tuesday, September 29, 2020, at the age of 72. Born on December 27, 1947, Don dedicated his life to his community and family. While no single photograph can truly capture a life well-lived, the memories of Don Grady Darby serve as lasting snapshots for all who knew him.

Don was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force and dedicated many years of service to the Georgia Department of Transportation as an area engineer before his retirement. His commitment to public service was evident throughout his career and his membership in the American Legion. Beyond his professional life, Don embraced the simple joys of life in Hahira. He found pleasure in farming, the tranquility of fishing, exploring new destinations through travel, and the camaraderie of grilling and cooking for loved ones. A true sports enthusiast, especially when it came to football, Don was also known for his gift of conversation – he truly loved to talk and connect with people.

He is survived by his loving wife, Debra M. Darby, who stood by his side throughout their journey together in Hahira. Don’s legacy continues through his son and daughter-in-law, Randall Kirk and Mendy Darby of Navarre, FL; his stepchildren, Brack and Roxanne Ricks of Hahira; and his cherished grandchildren: Zack Darby, Karsyn Darby, Taylor Whitley, Hadden Ricks, and Greyson Ricks. He also leaves behind his brother and sisters-in-law, Jon and Sherrell Darby of Hartsfield, GA, and Sharon Darby of Hahira, along with nephews, Joshua Darby (Laura), Tanner Darby (Lauren), and niece, Beth Mayer (Jason). Don was predeceased by his parents, Grady and Laurene Darby, and his brother, Ron Darby.

Friends and family are invited to pay their respects at a graveside funeral service on Friday, October 2, 2020, at eleven a.m. at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. Reverend Bob Ellis will officiate the service. Prior to the service, the family will receive visitors on Thursday evening from six until eight p.m. at the Martin McLane Funeral Home. In remembrance of Don’s generous spirit, the family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the GA Sheriff’s Boy’s Ranch, 5671 GA Hwy 122 East, Hahira, GA 31632. Condolences can be shared online at www.mclanecares.com. Martin McLane Funeral Home of Hahira is entrusted with the arrangements.

His memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
