How to Delete Photos from iCloud: Free Up Your Storage Space

Running out of iCloud storage can be a frustrating experience. Suddenly, your iPhone stops backing up, you can’t save new photos, and your digital life feels a bit…stuck. If you’re like many users, photos and videos are likely the biggest contributors to your iCloud storage consumption. The good news is, freeing up space is within your reach, and one of the most effective ways is to delete photos from iCloud that you no longer need.

Apple provides a generous 5GB of free iCloud storage when you first set up your account. This space is shared across backups, iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive, and other apps. While 5GB might seem sufficient initially, it can quickly fill up as you accumulate photos, videos, documents, and app data. You can always check your current iCloud storage usage through your device settings or on iCloud.com. If you’re consistently receiving notifications about low storage, or facing issues syncing your data, it’s time to take action.

This guide will walk you through various methods to delete photos from iCloud and reclaim valuable storage space. We’ll cover deleting photos across different Apple devices and platforms, ensuring you understand how to manage your iCloud photo library effectively. Before we dive into the deletion process, remember that managing your iCloud storage isn’t just about deleting photos. You also have the option to upgrade to iCloud+ for more storage if deleting content isn’t enough to meet your needs.

It’s also important to understand the distinction between your device storage and iCloud storage. Device storage is the physical space on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, while iCloud storage is cloud-based and syncs your data across devices. Deleting photos from your device only removes them from that specific device, whereas deleting from iCloud removes them from all devices synced with iCloud Photos.

Why Delete Photos from iCloud?

When your iCloud storage is full, several things can happen:

  • Backup Failures: Your device will no longer back up to iCloud, putting your important data at risk in case of device loss or damage.
  • No New Photo & Video Uploads: New memories captured on your iPhone won’t automatically upload to iCloud Photos, meaning they won’t be safely stored in the cloud or accessible on your other Apple devices.
  • Syncing Issues: iCloud Drive and other iCloud-dependent apps may not sync properly across your devices, leading to inconsistencies and potential data loss.
  • Email Problems: You might be unable to send or receive emails with your iCloud email address.

Deleting unnecessary photos from iCloud directly addresses these issues by freeing up space and allowing your iCloud services to function smoothly again.

Before you proceed with deleting any photos, it’s highly recommended to archive or create copies of any photos and videos you wish to keep. This ensures you don’t accidentally lose precious memories in the process of cleaning up your iCloud storage.

Methods to Delete Photos from iCloud

Here are several ways to delete photos from iCloud, depending on the device you are using:

  2. Tap “All Photos” in the Library tab to view all your iCloud Photos.
  3. Tap “Select” in the top right corner of the screen.

  2. Sign in with your Apple ID and password.
  3. Click on the “Photos” app icon.
  4. Select the photos or videos you want to delete.
    • To select multiple items, press and hold Command (⌘) on Mac or Control (Ctrl) on Windows while clicking on each item.
    • To select a range of photos, click the first photo, then press and hold Shift while clicking the last photo in the range.
  5. Click the Trash icon (delete button) in the toolbar at the top of the page.
  6. Confirm your action by clicking “Delete”.

3. Deleting Photos from the Photos App on Mac

If you use a Mac, you can manage your iCloud Photos library through the Photos app on your computer.

  1. Open the Photos app on your Mac.
  2. Navigate to the “Photos” tab or “Library” in the sidebar to view your iCloud Photos.
  3. Select the photos and videos you want to delete.
    • Use Command (⌘) + click to select multiple individual items.
    • Use Shift + click to select a range of items.
  4. Press the Delete key on your keyboard.
  5. Click “Delete” in the confirmation dialog to move the selected items to the “Recently Deleted” album.

4. Recovering Recently Deleted Photos

When you delete photos from iCloud Photos, they are not immediately permanently deleted. They are moved to the “Recently Deleted” album and remain there for 30 days. This gives you a grace period to recover photos if you deleted them by mistake. After 30 days, photos in the “Recently Deleted” album are permanently removed from iCloud.

To access and manage the “Recently Deleted” album:

  • On iPhone, iPad, or Apple Vision Pro: Open the Photos app, tap the “Albums” tab, scroll down to “Utilities”, and tap “Recently Deleted”.
  • On iCloud.com: Go to iCloud.com, sign in, and open the “Photos” app. Then, click on the “Recently Deleted” album in the sidebar.
  • On Mac: Open the Photos app, and click on “Recently Deleted” in the sidebar.

Within the “Recently Deleted” album, you have two options:

  • Recover: Select the photos you want to restore and tap or click “Recover”. The photos will be moved back to your main iCloud Photos library.
  • Delete Permanently: Select the photos you want to permanently remove and tap or click “Delete”. This will immediately and permanently delete the photos from iCloud, and they cannot be recovered.

To permanently delete photos immediately to free up space:

  1. Follow the steps above to access the “Recently Deleted” album on your device or iCloud.com.
  2. Tap or click “Select”.
  3. Select the photos you want to permanently delete.
  4. Tap or click “Delete” or “Delete Forever”.
  5. Confirm your action to permanently remove the photos.

By permanently deleting photos from the “Recently Deleted” album, you can immediately reclaim the iCloud storage space they were occupying.

Managing iCloud Storage Beyond Photos

While deleting photos is a significant step, remember that iCloud storage is used for more than just photos. To comprehensively manage your iCloud storage, consider these additional steps:

  • Reduce iCloud Backup Size: Choose which app data to back up and delete old backups you no longer need.
  • Delete Files from iCloud Drive: Remove unnecessary documents, files, and folders stored in iCloud Drive.
  • Manage Messages in iCloud: Delete old text messages and large attachments.
  • Clean Up iCloud Mail: Delete unwanted emails, especially those with large attachments, and empty your Trash folder.
  • Delete Voice Memos: Remove voice recordings you no longer need.
  • Manage FaceTime Data: Delete FaceTime data from iCloud if applicable.
  • Delete Apple Invites Data: If you use Apple Invites, delete old events to free up storage.

By combining photo deletion with these other storage management strategies, you can effectively optimize your iCloud storage and ensure your Apple devices and services function seamlessly. Regularly reviewing and managing your iCloud storage is a good practice to prevent storage issues and keep your digital life organized.
